How to Fade Audio In and Out

Fade In raises the level across a selected range. Fade Out lowers it. Use them to soften an edit or shape the entrance and exit of a clip.

Choose the right amount of audio

A very short selection can soften a click. A longer selection creates a noticeable musical transition. Listen to the phrase and select only the section whose level should change.

Apply one end at a time

  1. Select the opening section and choose Effects → Fade In.
  2. Select a separate range at the end and choose Effects → Fade Out.
  3. Listen to the full clip. Adjust either selection and repeat if the transition hides a word or begins too early.

Keep the purpose clear

A fade changes level over time. It does not automatically remove a gap, match two songs or move an edit point. For a join, first get the timing right, then use a short transition where needed.

Save a version you can compare

Export the edited audio under another name. If the fade feels wrong later, the original lets you change the timing without working from an already faded copy.
